My online ‘handle’ started off as thevoicesinmyhead and the reason I chose this is because that is what my characters to me. Voices nestled in my mind chatting away to one another and to me whenever I’m inclined to listen (and often when I’m not).
As you may already know I have quite a few stories planned and even more story ideas swirling around in my brain. Today I’m talking about how I choose what to write and when.
Some authors hate starting new things and thrive on the feeling they get when they finish projects. I’ve yet to finish a project. For me, all my feelings come at the beginning- when I start something new. Looking at that blank page, delving into the very beginning of your story, sometimes with only a single character whispering to you about who they are. I occasionally only get little snippets like I watched my parents die at the hand of the people I now protect or My father has barely looked in my direction for the last nine years because I remind him too much of my dead sister and The first time my mother tried to kill me – I was four. [those were all from different books- try and guess which <all my current WIPs are on the about me page>] – yes… most of my characters have some shitty aspect in their past.
It can sometimes be hard to know what to write and when to focus my attention on a certain story. At the moment, as you know, I am focusing all of my writing time on Hybrid and its prequel so I can tell you it’s finally ready! But this choice has not been an easy one. My Wings WIP has been inspiring me more and more lately, with current events playing into how my story really begins. Because it is a post-post-apocalyptic (set in a world well into recovering from the apocalypse), things that are happening now, are history in my book. Writing it like that has given me the freedom to include what I want in a realistic manner. But it also means that every time something happens in the world, I tend to be inspired to write Ibbiana’s story.
Once I finish Hybrid I’m going to have a difficult decision to make. Continue with Gryphon’s storyline and write Broken or move my mindset over into Wings and Ibbiana’s world. I want to do both, obviously. I adore what I have planned for both books and each has had a different level of preparation already. Broken’s storyline has been essentially mapped out already, and all of the worldbuilding from Hybrid will be carried over. For Wings, I have built the world up but the storyline is only half done. I don’t really know what will happen within its pages. My decision will be based on several factors: how passionate about the projects I am, how far along the book is, and what makes sense marketing and career-wise.
If I factor in all of that the most likely answer is that Broken will be next on my writing to-do list. There are some BIG things happening in that storyline- but first… I need to finish editing Hybrid. Better get back to it =P
As always, go write something!
